Solid hardwood, built by hand.

Walnut Wood Works is a family woodworking shop in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, founded by Justin Brady in 2010. We build custom butcher block countertops, floating shelves, and mantels from solid Appalachian hardwood — cut, glued, flattened, and finished by hand. No plywood. No veneer. Ever.

The maker

Who's behind the bench?

Walnut Wood Works was founded in 2010 by Justin Brady, a Tennessee woodworker who'd rather build one thing exactly right than a hundred things close enough. What began as a one-man shop is now a small team of skilled craftspeople in Bell Buckle — but every top, shelf, and mantel is still made to order, by hand, one piece at a time.

Justin and his wife Kathleen are both woodworkers, and their work has drawn attention well beyond the shop — from national television to design press. The standard hasn't changed since day one: solid hardwood, honest joinery, and a finish you'd be proud to hand down.

How it's made

How is each piece built?

Every order is built from scratch to your exact dimensions. Nothing is pulled from a stock shelf — lumber is selected and production scheduled per piece.

Material

Solid Appalachian hardwood

Black walnut, white oak, hard maple, and mountain cherry — kiln-dried to 7% moisture for stability. Never plywood, never veneer.

Joinery

Glued oversize, cut to the 1/16″

Tops are glued up oversize, then flattened, planed, and cut to your exact dimensions. CNC-machined cutouts, sealed before finishing.

Finish

4–6 coats, hand-rubbed

Natural oil (tung or mineral, food-safe), hardwax oil, or conversion varnish — sanded to 220 grit and hand-rubbed, cured before it ships.

Delivery

Crated & tracked

Roughly 8–10 weeks, built into a plywood crate sized to your piece and shipped nationwide — every order tracked stage by stage.

Our promise

Built right, or we make it right.

If a piece arrives damaged or not as described, we replace or repair it — 100%. It's custom work; we stand behind every board that leaves the shop.
