Wood Species

All of our wood species are particularly well suited for butcher block use. They are all very hard and dense to resist scratching and denting. Wood Species should be chosen based on look and color with no worries about hardness and durability. The finish choice makes a much larger difference in overall durability than the wood species.

Black Walnut

  • Deep chocolate brown coloration

  • Ages extraordinarily well, scratches and dings take on a darker rich color that over time only adds to the beauty of the top.

White Oak

  • Neutral Light Brown Coloration
  • Heavy Open Grain Pattern
  • High Durability, the predominant species in the Hardwood Flooring industry

Hard Maple

  • Neutral Blonde Coloration
  • Tight Closed Grain
  • Traditionally what Butcher Blocks have been made from throughout history

Construction Style

Edge Grain

Edge grain is the side of the wood board. The boards are cut into strips, turned on their sides, and connected together. They are cut to your chosen thickness before glue. Each board is 1.75" wide.

This is our main construction style and is available in thicknesses from 1.5" to 6" thick!

Tung Oil

  • This finish is all natural and 100% food safe. It is also organic and free from any diluents or harsh chemicals.
  • Ideal finish for working kitchens where you'll cut directly on the countertop.
  • Simple maintenance is required once a month. All you have to do is apply the liquid beeswax to the top which takes less than 5 minutes.
  • This finish gives the darkest appearance to the butcher block, because the oil soaks into the wood.
  • Ages extraordinarily well, scratches and dings take on a darker rich color that over time that adds to the beauty of the wood.

Hardwax Oil

  • This is a modified oil finish that forms tough water resistant topcoat, similar to Tung oil with less maintenance. 
  • 100% VOC free, meaning it’s free from hard odors and chemicals and environmentally friendly.
  • This finish is simple to maintain, scratches can be treated with a light sanding and new coat where needed.
  • This finish has the look and feel of a traditional oil finish, but is more waterproof and less maintenance. 

Conversion Varnish

  • Much like the clear coat on a car, conversion varnish forms a very hard layer over the top of the wood.
  • This naturally makes it our most protective finish, protecting the wood from water and almost all chemicals.
  • It is also the most low maintenance, requiring zero maintenance and cleans easily with any household cleaner.
  • This kind of finish provides a glassy feel and light coloring. Our CV finish has a matte gloss, but because of the build on top of the wood there is an inherent sheen to the finished product.

Unfinished

  • Raw Natural Wood
  • Great for DIY or to match an existing finish in the home
  • Sanded to 220 Grit and ready for finish.
  • We don't recommend leaving a top unfinished,
    this option is purely for those that desire to apply the finish themselves.
