01 Construction Style

How the boards are arranged.

Three ways to build the same slab. The arrangement decides how the grain reads across the surface.

Edge grain butcher block construction diagram

Edge Grain

  • Boards ripped to 1-3/4″ strips, turned on edge, glued up
  • Flattened and planed to exact thickness after glue-up
  • Our most popular construction
Plank style butcher block construction diagram

Plank Style

  • Wide boards face-glued for a continuous grain run
  • Reads as a single slab, not a stack of staves
  • Up to 42″ wide
End grain butcher block construction diagram

End Grain

  • Fibers stand vertical — the classic chopping surface
  • Knife edges part the grain instead of cutting it
  • Set blank sizes, tung oil or unfinished
02 Wood Species

Each one changes a room in a different way.

All four are hard and dense enough for butcher block. Choose on colour and grain — the finish drives durability far more than the species does.

Black walnut butcher block countertop with tung oil finish

Black Walnut

  • Deep chocolate brown
  • Playful grain, moderate variation
  • Dings darken and enrich with age
White oak butcher block countertop with hardwax oil finish

White Oak

  • Neutral light brown
  • Heavy open grain
  • The flooring industry's workhorse
Hard maple butcher block countertop with conversion varnish finish

Hard Maple

  • Neutral blonde
  • Tight closed grain
  • What butcher blocks have always been
Mountain cherry butcher block countertop with tung oil finish

Mountain Cherry

  • Strawberry blonde
  • Tight closed grain
  • Darker streaks through the figure
03 Finish

Protection with character.

The one decision that changes how the top lives. Cutting directly on the surface? Tung oil. Wet bar, prep sink, kids? Conversion varnish.

Walnut butcher block finished in tung oil

Tung Oil

  • All natural, 100% food safe
  • The one to pick if you cut on the top
  • Easy mineral-oil upkeep
  • Darkest look; ages best
Walnut butcher block finished in hardwax oil

Hardwax Oil

  • Modified oil, tough water-resistant topcoat
  • 100% VOC free
  • Food safe once cured
  • Spot repairable — sand lightly, recoat
Walnut butcher block finished in conversion varnish

Conversion Varnish

  • Hard film, like automotive clear coat
  • Our most protective option
  • Zero maintenance
  • Don't cut on it
Unfinished walnut butcher block sanded to 220 grit

Unfinished

  • Raw wood, sanded to 220 grit
  • For DIY finishing or matching an existing top
  • We don't recommend leaving it bare
04 Thickness

Exact — never nominal.

When we say 2″, the top measures 2″. Every top is glued up oversize, then planed and cut to exact dimensions — so the finished thickness is the number you ordered, not a nominal size.

1-1/2″

The most common perimeter thickness. Sits flush with standard cabinet runs.

2″

The most common island thickness. Reads as substantial from across a room.

Up to 4″

Bar tops, waterfall legs, chopping blocks. Priced by the quarter inch. For thicker tops, contact us.

05 Dimensions

Your size. To the 1/16 inch.

No stock sizes, no size tiers, no rounding up to the next foot. Give us the number your kitchen actually needs and that's what gets built.

Stunning! I ordered a large piece of butcher block for my kitchen island; 35\\\" x 74\\\", 2\\\" thick, black walnut, with the hardwax oil finish. The grain pattern is interesting and very beautiful, and the piece was put together with the thought and skill of a true artist. The counter is exactly what I wanted and I am so happy with everything about it.

Absolutely obsessed with our walnut washer/dryer topper, which completely elevates our laundry room.

From a walkthrough of the shop to consistent communication to a final product that is stunning (to put it mildly), this was a great experience with great people producing a great product.

Every review — even the 1-star

Reviews on a company's own site are cherry-picked; we know. So read them all on Google, unfiltered. Fair warning: there's one lonely 1-star — no comment, no name, no order we can trace. Everyone else gave five.

Questions we get every week

Butcher block, answered.

What is a butcher block countertop?
A butcher block countertop is a solid-hardwood work surface built from full-thickness boards glued together — not a veneer over plywood or particleboard. Every Walnut Wood Works top is made to order from a single species (black walnut, white oak, hard maple, or mountain cherry), flattened and finished by hand, in any size from 24″ to 155″ long.
What sizes can you make?
Any length from 24″ to 155″ and any width from 13″ to 72″ — to the 1/16 inch, not to the nearest size tier. Plank style tops out at 42″ wide. End grain is built from set blank sizes. Set your dimensions in the builder above and the price recalculates instantly.
How is the price calculated?
By square footage, adjusted for species, thickness, and finish, with crated freight built in. The builder shows your total before you add anything to the cart — no quote request, no waiting on an email. More on our pricing →
Can I cut directly on the countertop?
It depends on the finish. If you want to cut on the top, choose an oil finish — tung oil on walnut, food-safe mineral oil on the lighter woods — all natural, food safe, and any scratch touches up. We don't recommend cutting directly on conversion varnish or hardwax oil.
How do you ship something this big?
By freight carrier, curbside. Each top is encased in padding and then a solid plywood crate built to that top's exact dimensions. For extreme sizes the driver may need help unloading.
How do I install it?
Any competent contractor, cabinet maker, or installer can do it, and instructions ship in the box. Drill four to six oversized holes through the cabinet corner braces, set and centre the top, pre-drill from underneath about halfway through, then screw up through the cabinets so the screw enters the top roughly 1″. Use washers — wood moves with the seasons and the slotted holes let it.
Which species is most durable?
All four are hard and dense enough that durability shouldn't drive the decision. Choose on look and colour. The finish makes a far larger difference to how the top holds up than the species does.
Can I put a hot pan on it?
Warm pans, hot food, and baking dishes are fine. Don't set a pan straight off the burner onto the wood — it's wood, after all.
