As featured in
01 Shelf Type

Three ways to hang solid wood.

All three are solid hardwood all the way through — the difference is thickness and how the grain reads across the face.

Plank style floating shelf

Floating Shelf

  • Plank style — wide boards, continuous grain
  • 1-5/8″ and 1-3/4″
  • Our lightest, cleanest profile
Butcher block floating shelf

Butcher Block Shelf

  • Edge-grain glue-up, staves on edge
  • Our signature 2″ thickness
  • Reads substantial from across a room
Solid hardwood fireplace mantel shelf

Mantel Shelf

  • 2-1/2″ through 5-1/2″
  • Sized for a firebox surround
  • Includes our floating shelf brackets
02 Wood Species

Each one changes a room in a different way.

Solid stock, hand selected board by board. Choose on colour and grain — all four are hard enough for anything you'll put on a shelf.

Black walnut shelf stock, deep chocolate brown

Black Walnut

  • Deep chocolate brown
  • Playful grain, moderate variation
  • Dings darken and enrich with age
White oak shelf stock with open grain

White Oak

  • Neutral light brown
  • Heavy open grain
  • Extremely durable
Hard maple shelf stock, neutral blonde

Hard Maple

  • Neutral blonde
  • Tight closed grain
  • Reads bright in a dark kitchen
Mountain cherry shelf stock, strawberry blonde

Mountain Cherry

  • Strawberry blonde
  • Tight closed grain
  • Darker streaks through the figure
03 Finish

Protection with character.

Conversion varnish in a satin sheen is our standard — a fully waterproof, ultra-hard film that needs no maintenance. Three other options in the builder if you want a different look.

Walnut finished in satin conversion varnish

Conversion Varnish

  • 100% waterproof film
  • Our most protective option
  • Zero maintenance

I ordered six floating shelves 12" deep x 48" long and specified fully finished black walnut. The material is 2" thick and incredibly solid, true and well finished. I like the fact they offer a ready-to-install system, pre-drilled with concealed steel supports. The quality of the finish is equal to the finest furniture.

I ordered a small shelf for my kitchen a few months ago. These guys did beautiful work. I had ordered a table top and a larger floating shelf from another supplier that I found on Etsy. WWW's work is head and shoulders better than this other supplier. I wish I would have found you before!

Every review — even the 1-star

Reviews on a company's own site are cherry-picked; we know. So read them all on Google, unfiltered. Fair warning: there's one lonely 1-star — no comment, no name, no order we can trace. Everyone else gave five.

Questions we get every week

Shelves, answered.

What is a floating shelf?
A floating shelf is a solid-hardwood shelf that mounts on a concealed metal bracket, so no supports show beneath it. Every Walnut Wood Works shelf is made to order from solid Appalachian hardwood — not veneer — with a heavy-duty hidden bracket rated to 150 lb into studs, in lengths from 12″ to 120″.
What sizes can you make?
Standard shelves run from 12″ to 120″ long and 7″ to 12″ deep — to the 1/16 inch, not to the nearest size tier. Set your dimensions in the builder above and the price recalculates instantly. For anything longer or deeper, email Orders@walnutwoodworks.com and we'll quote it.
How is the price calculated?
By size, adjusted for species, type, thickness, and finish — with the bracket and free lower-48 shipping already in it. The builder shows your total before you add anything to the cart. No quote request, no waiting on an email.
How much weight will it hold?
Each heavy-duty bracket is rated at 150 lb when mounted into studs. Brackets are stackable, so longer shelves get more of them. Mounted into drywall instead of studs, your capacity is whatever your anchors are rated for.
What's included with the shelf?
The heavy-duty floating shelf bracket ships with every shelf. Choose pre-drilled and recessed and we bore the shelf for the bracket rods and recess the back face so the backplate disappears into the wall — mount the bracket, slide the shelf on.
How thick are the shelves?
Our signature butcher block shelf is 2″ thick. Plank-style floating shelves run 1-5/8″ and 1-3/4″. Mantels are heavier — 2-1/2″ up to 5-1/2″. No plywood, no veneer, at any thickness.
What finish do they come with?
Conversion varnish in a satin sheen is our standard — a 100% waterproof, ultra-hard film that needs no maintenance. Tung oil, hardwax oil, and unfinished are all available in the builder.
Can I install these myself?
Yes, and most customers do. Mount the brackets into studs or blocking first. If the shelf came pre-drilled, slide it on. If not, use the drill guide kit — it removes the need for a drill press. Construction adhesive on the rods makes it permanent, though it's rarely necessary. Full instructions →
