Sizing

Length and depth.

Start with the wall, not the catalog. We cut every shelf to the 1/16 inch, anywhere from 12" to 120" long and 7" to 12" deep, so the shelf fits the space exactly.

Depth follows what the shelf will carry: around 8" for books, frames and decor; 10" for most dinner plates and a coffee setup; 12" for larger platters and serving pieces. Length follows the studs: a shelf that spans two or three studs gets the full strength of every bracket.

Strength

Brackets and weight.

Every shelf ships with our hidden steel bracket, built in our own shop and rated about 150 lb per bracket when screwed into a wall stud. Longer shelves get more brackets, roughly one per 24" of length, so a long shelf carries more.

The shelf is pre-drilled and recessed to slide over the bracket, so nothing shows once it's up.

From the shop

The rating assumes screws into wood studs. Drywall anchors alone won't carry a loaded hardwood shelf. Check our bracket instructions before you drill.

Material

Wood and finish.

All four hardwoods make strong, stable shelves, so choose on look. For a kitchen or bathroom, choose conversion varnish: it's our recommended finish because it's the most waterproof and needs essentially no upkeep. See the finishes guide.

Common questions

Floating shelves, answered.

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
Each of our hidden steel brackets is rated about 150 lb when screwed into a wall stud. Longer shelves get more brackets, about one per 24" of length, so capacity grows with the shelf. The wall matters as much as the shelf: brackets must go into studs, not just drywall.
How deep should a floating shelf be?
Match the depth to what sits on it. Around 8" suits books, frames and decor; 10" fits most dinner plates and coffee-bar gear; 12" handles larger platters and serving pieces. We build any depth from 7" to 12".
Do your floating shelves come with brackets?
Yes. Every floating shelf includes our heavy-duty hidden steel bracket, made in-house, with the shelf pre-drilled and recessed to slide over it. You can also buy the brackets on their own if you want to build your own shelf.
What wood is best for floating shelves?
All four of our hardwoods make strong, stable shelves. Choose on look: black walnut for dark and rich, white oak for a light modern kitchen, hard maple for clean and bright, cherry for warm color that deepens with age.
What finish should I choose for a kitchen or bathroom shelf?
Conversion varnish. It's our recommended finish because it's the most waterproof, and it needs essentially no maintenance. Natural oil and hardwax oil look more natural but ask for occasional upkeep. You choose the finish in the builder.
How are floating shelves shipped?
Free by UPS Ground to the lower 48 states, in custom foam packaging, with tracking emailed when your shelf ships. Lead time is 4-6 weeks, with rush production available.
