01 Sizing

Start at the firebox, not the wall.

Measure the width of your firebox opening, then decide how far past it you want the mantel to run. Three to six inches on each side is the usual call — enough to frame the opening without looking like a beam. Give us the finished length and we cut to it, down to the 1/16″.

Representational — grain and colour vary board to board

Clearance to combustibles — check before you order

A wood mantel is a combustible, and how close it can sit to the firebox opening is governed by code, not by us. The International Residential Code (R1001.11) and NFPA 211 both set the same rule for masonry fireplaces: nothing combustible within 6″ of the opening, and anything combustible within 12″ of the opening may project no more than 1/8″ for each 1″ it sits back from it. A 6″-deep mantel, by that math, wants to be at least 12″ above the opening.

If you have a manufactured or zero-clearance firebox, the manufacturer's listed clearances govern instead — and they are often stricter. Your local code official has the final word either way. Measure your clearance first, then set the depth in the builder. Not sure how it works out? Email Orders@walnutwoodworks.com with your opening size and the height you have to work with and we'll talk it through before anything gets cut.

02 Thickness

How much wood you want to see.

Every mantel is an edge-grain glue-up — 1-3/4″ strips stood on edge and laminated, so the piece is solid hardwood front to back at any thickness. The builder steps in 1/4″ increments from 2-1/2″ to 5-1/2″; these three are where most orders land.

03 Wood Species

A mantel is the thing people look at.

It sits at eye level in the middle of the room, so the species does more work here than anywhere else in the house. Solid stock, hand selected board by board.

04 Finish

Protection with character.

Conversion varnish in a satin sheen is what we recommend — a fully waterproof, ultra-hard film that needs no maintenance, which suits a surface that collects candles, stockings and dust. Three other options in the builder if you want a different look.

  • Zero maintenance

05 Mounting

Nothing holding it up that you can see.

The same hidden bracket that carries our floating shelves carries the mantel — CNC cut and TIG welded in a six-axis robot cell, in the same building as the wood. Every one is square, with accurate hole spacing.

Hidden steel floating bracket, the mantel mounting hardware

Heavy-duty bracket, included

  • 75 lb per wall stud — longer brackets reach more studs
  • Stackable, so longer mantels get more of them
  • Backplate disappears behind the wood
Solid walnut pre-drilled and recessed for a hidden floating bracket

Pre-drilled and recessed

  • We bore the mantel for the bracket rods here
  • Back face recessed to swallow the backplate
  • Mount the bracket, slide the mantel on
Visible L-bracket, the alternative mantel mounting option

Brick, stone and block

  • Masonry needs masonry anchors rated for the load — not the wood screws in the box
  • Visible L-brackets and no-bracket (mount it your own way) are both options in the builder

I ordered six floating shelves 12\" deep x 48\" long and specified fully finished black walnut. The material is 2\" thick and incredibly solid, true and well finished. I like the fact they offer a ready-to-install system, pre-drilled with concealed steel supports. The quality of the finish is equal to the finest furniture.

I ordered a small shelf for my kitchen a few months ago. These guys did beautiful work. I had ordered a table top and a larger floating shelf from another supplier that I found on Etsy. WWW\'s work is head and shoulders better than this other supplier. I wish I would have found you before!

Questions we get every week

Mantels, answered.

What is a fireplace mantel shelf?
A fireplace mantel shelf is the horizontal shelf that runs above a firebox opening. Every Walnut Wood Works mantel is made to order from solid Appalachian hardwood — an edge-grain glue-up, not veneer over a hollow box — from 2-1/2″ to 5-1/2″ thick and 12″ to 120″ long, on a concealed steel bracket rated 75 lb per wall stud.
How long should my mantel be?
Measure the width of your firebox opening and add 3″ to 6″ on each side — a 42″ opening usually takes a 48″ to 54″ mantel. Wider looks like a beam; narrower looks undersized. We cut to the 1/16″, so give us the number you actually want rather than the nearest stock size.
How far above the firebox does a mantel have to sit?
On a masonry fireplace, the IRC (R1001.11) and NFPA 211 allow no combustible material within 6″ of the opening, and any combustible within 12″ of the opening may project no more than 1/8″ for each 1″ of clearance from it — so a 6″-deep mantel wants at least 12″ of height above the opening. A manufactured or zero-clearance firebox follows its own listed clearances instead, and those are often stricter. Check your local code before you order.
How thick should a mantel be?
Most orders land at 3″ to 3-1/2″. 2-1/2″ reads as a heavy shelf and suits a narrow opening; 4″ and up gives you the reclaimed-beam look and wants a wide opening and a tall wall. The builder steps in 1/4″ increments from 2-1/2″ to 5-1/2″.
How is the price calculated?
By size, adjusted for species, thickness and finish — with the bracket and free lower-48 shipping already in it. The builder above shows your total before you add anything to the cart. No quote request, no waiting on an email.
How much weight will it hold?
Brackets are rated 75 lb per wall stud they're screwed into (studs on 16″ centers), so a bracket that reaches two studs holds about 150 lb. Brackets are stackable, so longer mantels get more of them. Mounted into drywall instead of studs, your capacity is whatever your anchors are rated for.
Can I mount one on a brick or stone fireplace?
Yes, but the hardware in the box is sized for wood studs. Masonry needs masonry anchors — sleeve anchors or heavy-duty screws rated for the load, set into the brick or block rather than the mortar joints. The bracket itself is the same. If you'd rather not drill masonry, the builder also offers visible L-brackets and a no-bracket option so you can mount it your own way.
Is it solid wood all the way through?
Yes. Our mantels are 1-3/4″ hardwood strips stood on edge and glued up to your thickness — solid front to back and end to end. No plywood, no veneer, no hollow box built to look thick.
What finish should I choose?
Conversion varnish in a satin sheen is our recommended finish: a 100% waterproof, ultra-hard film that needs no maintenance. If you want the warmer hand-rubbed look, we use tung oil on black walnut and food-grade mineral oil on white oak, hard maple and cherry — tung oil's amber tone flatters walnut's dark grain but would muddy the lighter species. Hardwax oil and unfinished are also in the builder.

Configure Your Mantel

Walnut Wood Works builds custom solid hardwood fireplace mantel shelves to order in Bell Buckle, Tennessee. Mantels run from 12 to 120 inches long, 7 to 12 inches deep, and 2-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches thick in 1/4 inch steps, cut to the 1/16 inch. Species: black walnut, white oak, hard maple, mountain cherry. Finishes: conversion varnish, tung oil on walnut or food-grade mineral oil on the lighter species, hardwax oil, and unfinished. Each mantel is an edge-grain glue-up of 1-3/4 inch hardwood strips stood on edge, solid front to back, with no plywood or veneer. A heavy-duty concealed steel bracket rated 75 pounds per wall stud is included, and mantels can be pre-drilled and recessed for it; visible L-brackets and a no-bracket option are also available. A mantel is normally sized 3 to 6 inches wider than the firebox opening on each side, and clearance above the opening is set by the IRC and NFPA 211 for masonry fireplaces or by the manufacturer's listed clearances for a zero-clearance firebox.
